Yampa  Valley  Land  Trust

A  YVLT  Success  Story:

THE  FULTON  RANCH

The Fulton family of Hayden has forever protected their historic 1,130-acre ranch with a conservation easement held by Yampa Valley Land Trust.  Funding for the bargain-sale purchase of the Fulton Ranch conservation easement was made possible through Routt County Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) funds, supporters of Yampa Valley Land Trust and a generous donation of part of the conservation easement value from the Fulton family.

The Fulton Ranch is located approximately fifteen miles north of Hayden in the scenic Elkhead Valley, where the Fulton family has a long ranching history. The Fulton Ranch has been in Chuck Fulton’s family for nearly a century and he was born on nearby Cottonwood  Creek.  Chuck’s family moved to the Town of Hayden by the time he reached school age.  With this conservation easement, Chuck and his family have ensured that their property will continue to be maintained in a way that supports critical wildlife habitat and the continuation of their rich ranching heritage in Routt County.

Chuck harbors a genuine love of his land and has a particularly keen eye for the resident birds and other wildlife.  The Fulton Ranch is part of a vast remnant of prehistoric oceanic floor and holds many natural treasures, including fossilized oyster beds on the property.  The rolling hills of the Fulton Ranch encompass over a third of a mile of Bull Gulch as well as several small creeks with vegetation that includes aspen groves, sagebrush and gambel-oak hillsides, open meadows and riparian areas.  The Fulton Ranch’s natural features provide critical habitat for both sage grouse and sharp-tailed grouse, two species of special concern in Northwest Colorado because of their declining numbers due to loss of habitat and fragmentation from rangeland conversion and rural-residential development.  Blue grouse is also found on the ranch.  In addition, the property provides nesting sites for sandhill crane and habitat for mule deer, elk, pronghorn, mountain lion, a variety of raptors and many other species.
