Yampa  Valley  Land  Trust

 Summary of 2004-2005 Conserved Properties

Every conservation easement transaction is a partnership between the landowner and the land conservation organization.  To date, Yampa Valley Land Trust permanently protects approximately 36,388 acres in 53 conservation transactions throughout Northwest Colorado. Most recently, Yampa Valley Land Trust is honored to have had the opportunity to conserve the following properties:

YZ Ranch:  5,280 acres

The Wheeler family protected for current and future generations, 5,280 acres of ranchland, meadows, forest land, sage-oak hillsides and lush riparian areas on the South Fork of the White River, located in the Stillwater Valley, Rio Blanco County, through a donated conservation easement.  The family runs the ranch primarily as a hay operation with some livestock through careful land stewardship.  The property supports extensive conservation values including a good example of an intact riparian wetland and a globally rare montane woodland.  Additionally, the property preserves unobstructed views of the Flat Top Mountains and provides habitat for a variety of vegetation and wildlife.  The YZ Ranch represents a valuable cornerstone in conservation in the Stillwater Valley.  Link for more information about this conservation project.

 Acord Ranch:  1,400 acres

The Acord Land and Cattle Company conserved a portion of the Acord Ranch, located south of Yampa, Colorado and near the Flat Tops Wilderness Area.  The property consists of open pastures and irrigated hay meadows used for agriculture and is visible from Colorado Highway 131 and Routt County Roads 3, 5 and 7.  The property adds to the conservation values of the area by supporting a variety of wildlife and habitat including elk, deer, Columbian sharp-tailed grouse, greater sage grouse, mountain and western bluebird, red-tailed hawk, golden eagle and bald eagle.  This transaction was made possible through funding from ROCO PDR, NRCS FRPP, GOCO, the landowners donation and your support. Link for more information about this conservation project.

Turner-Trull Ranch:  747 acres

Maxine (Trull) Turner, fourth generation native of Routt County, conserved her the Trull Ranch in order “to preserve the land as God made it.”  Maxine is a fourth generation native of Routt County and great-granddaughter to John Trull, whose brother was the original homesteader of the town of Trull, located at the base of Elk Mountain (aka Sleeping Giant.  The Trull Ranch is located northeast of Milner, Colorado, just north of the Yampa River and west of the Elk River. The property consists of open meadows and rolling hillsides, a portion of which is located within the De Cora Gulch.  The Trull property also preserves valuable historical and agricultural assets, as the some of the original ranch structures are still located on the property and the meadows have been used for agricultural purposes for over 90 years.  This transaction was made possible through funding from ROCO PDR, GOCO, the landowners donation and your support.  Link for more information about this conservation project.

The Card Place on the Strang Ranch:  320 acres

Mary and Bart Strang protected 321 acres of the Strang Ranch known as the Card Place.  The Card Place, west of the White River National Forest and Flat Tops Wilderness Area, is approximately 5 miles from the town of Meeker, Colorado and consists almost entirely of irrigated hay meadows and helps to support a significant variety of wildlife species.  Specifically, the Card Place is in close proximity to the Colorado Division of Wildlife Oakridge Wildlife Area, an important concentration area for one of the largest elk herds in the world.  This transaction was made possible through funding from NRCS FRPP, GOCO, the landowners donation and your support.

LK Ranch Grand Hogback:  3,700 acres

The LK Ranch is located in the agricultural heart of the White River Valley adjacent to the Grand Hogback in Rio Blanco County, Colorado.  The LK Ranch is surrounded by public lands (including Bureau of Land Management lands, White River National Forest lands and the nearby Oak Ridge State Wildlife Area) and provides critical habitat for a multitude of wildlife species. The multigenerational landowners have a long-standing history in the Valley and conserved a total of 3,700 acres.  Link for more information regarding this conservation project

THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS POSSIBLE!
